Does anyone know how much this thing will cost?
September 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
According to Nikon’s homepage it’ll be only compatible with the D90. And that’s pretty likely, because the D90 won’t have a 10pin port.

@akizidenz: It’s definitely compatible with the cameras I listed, via the cables mentioned above.

And the question remains about cost. I can’t find any price reference on the NikonUSA web site. Has anyone heard how the GP-1 will go for?

First indications are ~£650 (UKP) - ~$800 (US)
About the cost of a descent camera!
I have been using a Garmin with the exorbitant Nikon GPS Cord MC-35
for two years.
Questions remain about..
Battery consumption?
Satalite system?
Parallel connections? another 10-pin remote control etc. there are none!
I suspect a perfectly workable generic imitation (note.. “imitation” not counterfeit) will appear on eBay at ~$100 by Christmas.

You can already get the GeoPic II (low power) at B&H for $300 or £180

Here is the site of the maker for more info: http://www.customidea.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=126
I wish I had a D700

You may also get the Solmeta N1+ at $175 http://www.solmeta.com
It has a built-in battery which can work 10 continous hours independently, also it can get power from the camera.
It can also auto freeze the gps signals inside a room.
It supports D700 perfectly.

I bought one of the GeoPic II, but it only comes with a 10-pin connector, so it will not work with my new D90.
Anyone know if there is / or will be a converter for a 10-pin accessory and the D90 accessory socket?

List Price is $249.00 Major on-line retailers selling for $30.00 of that. Making Street Price $209.00 J&R, Adorama.
Should work much better than alternatives not specifically designed for Nikon. Two cables included one 10-pin connector and one USB type for D90 and later Nikons.

Does anyone know if there is a Bluetooth GPS to Nikon 10-pin connector solution ?

The GeoPic II is deffo the best one out there. It has far more ‘intelligence’ than the other ones. It has a proper low power mode and a freeze mode for indoors. Service is excellent too. http://www.customidea.com available at B&H also.

I will recommend a Easytag GPS which you can visit http://www.e-geotag.com for details. It is more functional and more featured than GP-1. It can geotag in real time and log the trails at the same time.

My ideal GPS devoice should include the fellows: first, easy to install and use, because I don’t like to set complicated things. Second, catch GPS info quickly, and accurately. Third, do not affect any function that my camera has, like hotshoe and 10-pin shutter. And it is really small so I can carry it everywhere freely. Easytagger GPS fills all of them, I love it.

I ordered my GPS online http://www.e-geotag.com/shopping.aspx, by paypal which is safe and convenient. And I received the package after 4 days by express though the shipping fee is a little expensive; anyway, it was really fast. To my great joy, it is much smaller than it seemed on the website, we can say tiny and cute.
I test it by going to the mountain nearby with my D300. The easytagger was easy setting and easy to use it caught satellite signal within 1 minute. Not only it recorded the geo info currently, but also tracked the route that I walked, plotting it along with the photos.
I put them in google map and share it with my family and friends, easytagger made my trip quite meaningful!

GP-1 is about $140, it is too expensive for me, so I chose another GPS called Easytagger, only $169. As far as I use, no problem yet.
